Sunday Ride - weather call and 1000k's for kids

1000k's for Kids

This Sundays ride was originally planned as a Escort ride for the 1000k's for kids riders in support of  Dan and Phil as they head off a 8 day tour of the state. The BG were going to try to keep them out of the wind for the first 50km or so as we suspect Dan and Phil are going to spend a bit of time of the front. Unfortunately escort duties are a non starter. However lets see if we can get a couple of BG's down to the 

Adelaide Bowls Club on Dequetteville Tce (Rymill park) at 7:15am to see them off.

It looks like the foul weather will finally break for the weekend. So time to get out and enjoy the Hills.

The planned route for Sunday is  Cudlee Creek via the Gorge, Coffee at the Cudlee Cafe and then a return via Fox Creek, Lenswood, Forrest Range.

For those feeling their fitness levels are down a return down the Gorge is a option.

REVIEW - OPINION
Out the box - neat, nice sneaky black decals, carbon weave brake surface with nude body, white logo on the hub, neat, very sneaky. First thing you note is they are light! The wide U shaped rim looks and feels nice in hand.

On the bike, the CU35's feel great in the wind, make quick adjustments to line and the lean is very responsive thanks to the mid depth 35mm U section rim. They don't grab gusts of wind like my 45 or 50mm traditional 'V' profile shaped rims. I'm no wind tunnel but they feel just as quick as my 45mm deep rims, holding 50kms swapping off, while training on the flats has not been a problem. Power climbing and sprints feel responsive, quick engaging sprawl in the hub picks up the power quick off the mark or out the corner. 

Noteworthy smooth ride, with wide rim body matched up to a 25mm tyre, just squeezed into the Propel. Little bit of flex in the wheelset, gives it a snap and smoothes out the bumps. If you have never ridden carbon rims, these will feel buttery smooth! Breaking surface inspires confidence and it has that nice Zipp hum under breaking.

The 35mm deep rim is great if you want to run one set of wheels and not think about swapping for crosswinds etc. A one-stop wheelset for a BG. Deep enough to get aero benefits, without catching the crosswind, and light for the climbing effort.

Last Sunday we took to the hills and we realised that we didn’t have a good set of contact phone numbers in case people get separated. It’s been about 5 years since we did an exchange.

BG Club Lunch

We have had a proposal for changing the club lunch to an outbound ride finishing in the Barossa or McLaren vale, with a return via pickup or mini-bus. It has the advantage of not having to ride home post lunch and gets us out into places we normally wouldn’t go. I will scope out a couple of possible target destinations. Suggestions welcome.

 Approx 55km/45km and 800 vertical meters .

Tour Down Under

The Routes for the Tour Down Under have been released. The Bupa Challenge is a set of interesting and familiar choices. 

In BG speak the ride consists of a Three Gorges with a twist then a quick crazy Brian out to Mt Pleasant, a alley-oop back to Charleston, setting up an inverted Foxy, leading into a  reverse Foothills, followed by a SAWFT Pain Lives Here with no return on investment and ending with a Billsy Roller Coaster.

Message from Brian

Message from Brian
I went to see Brian yesterday and while he officially has an excuse and a doctors certificate to miss the No Excuses Ride on Sunday he says no one else does and that he expects everyone to be out. He also gave  me detailed instructions on when and how fast to form a pace line as well as what I need to do to keep everyone together down Victoria Parade. 

Brian is looking better but still having trouble with the lung not clearing up. That is delaying him getting the broken bones especially his shoulder seen to.

I caught him in Physiotherapy being told off by the Physio for going too hard on the bike. That doesn't sound like Brian at all...

It's that time of year. Le Tour is about to start and we all become sleep deprived zombies especially after the mountain stages, as well as stacking on some kilos with all the late night snacks.

So it timely that this Sunday is the No Excuses ride and can substitute snacks for a Vanilla slice at Glenelg and argue over the Tour and what may or may not happen to Richie.

Sunday Ride, Ride Report and Brian/Mike Update

It has been dry so far this June if you call last Sunday mist dry. This coming Sunday looks like it may be wet and hence it will be a Weather Call.

Brian and Mike Update
 I went into see Brian on Monday morning which was fortunate as he was getting ready to be discharged.  He was in a bit of pain as they having trouble balancing the meds. He has now been released and is going to a rehabilitation centre (details in email broadcast). Mike Lyons was driving him there. He is in good spirits and he and Mike have vowed to get back on the bike. The new rule is they ride down any descents at the back with me.

Interestingly enough his doctor has recently taken up cycling so we had a good chat. 

Mike is back at work so hopefully the Shoulder and the Thigh are getting better.

Ride Report - BG's in the Mist
As would be expect Sundays ride was a little bit subdued due to the previous weeks prang and the weather. Six BG gathered for a ride best described as atmospheric in a "Hound of the Baskervilles" sort of way. The Mist started out okay but actually got worse as the ride progressed.  All was going well with no giant devil dogs in sight with rider as we were riding to the conditions and maintaining good separation when David H hit something long and sharp on Port road just before Bower road. It ripped a 3 cm gash in his rear tyre. A search of the area revealed nothing on the road except for a used prophylactic we decided that the tyre had just ripped itself apart in disgust when it realised what it had just run over.

Inserting a $20 note didn't work because of the size of the gash and as he didn't have any $50's handy so Phil gave him one of the those Tyre boot repair stickers that has been sitting in his repair kit for about 4 years. That worked an absolute treat and David turned and headed for home. Hopefully he made it home.

Hugh won the sprint and we called it short on account of the visibility with Coffee at the Chocalat at Henley Square. The mist was just sitting on dead calm ocean. All we needed was a fin to break the surface.  
Home was via the Henley Beach road and the Mist was only just showing signs of lifting as we got back to town. So all up a enjoyable ride.

Brian and Mike Update

Some updates

Brian

Dan visited today and thankfully the tally of injury and stuff broken was not added too. This from Dan 

Saw Brian this morning: as reported 9 broken ribs, fracture in temporal lobe area, fractured clavicle, dislocated AC joint and punctured lung - other than that he's ok

All his injuries are healing ok-ish.

His lung is improving and once that's better he'll probably be released for home/outpatients.

He's ok and very thankful for his calls/messages.

Mike 

He is back at work after Sportmed gave him a good once over.  Apart from loss of skin and some general soreness, he has,

  •  a bruise from where Brian ran into him (which is still growing but is currently 40cm long)
  •  a small bleed into the muscle but is not serious
  •  a tear in the AC and some Bursitis in the shoulder
It looks like it will only need conservative treatment only.

Brian Update

All

I went into the RAH to see Brain this afternoon. He is in good spirits, but as its now a couple of days after the accident he is very sore and grateful for the pain management button.

It turns out he has actually broken 9 ribs, which is a true job of work and given himself a mild concussion just to cap things off.  

Brian would like to thank everyone for their assistance and support, especially the BG boys who were there on the day and the lady who kindly stopped to help.

MEN DOWN - MONDAY UPDATE

So we can probably call this the Brian's f*%$ed himself up good and f*^#ing proper edition... Brian remains in good spirits today, even through the AC separation had been confirmed and a minor fracture of his skull (in his words: 'nothing to worry about') has been discovered this morning. In short, he is being a trooper with some fairly significant injuries causing him a lot of pain.

So a little more on what happened yesterday morning:

A group of six BG donned full finger gloves and, seeing the great weather (cold, but clear and zero wind), set out for what was planned to be an Old Freeway to the Lofty Summit, then Ashton, Cherryville and down Montacute for coffee somewhere around Newton.

Bollards, then Lofty was knocked off at a steady pace, and the group posed for this work of art at the summit...



In retrospect, this should have been seen as a portent of doom, as several years ago, about ten minutes after about 15 of us posed at Outer Harbour in our matching kit, we had the infamous Macolino Stackolino where Aldo and Alf went down with most unfortunate consequences for Alf.

Back to yesterday, after departing the summit, we headed down Mt Lofty Summit Road, to Greenhill Road and then onto Woods Hill Road. About 1.2 kilometres from the Greenhill Road intersection, at one of those innocuous right handers, Mike T was leading out Brian and Steve B.

It would appear that Mike lost traction on either some gravel or a patched longitudinal crack near the apex and went down in the classic front wheel 'low side'. Whilst Mike was sliding along the gravel, it appears that Brian went straight, front wheel first, into Mike's left thigh. Steve B reports a fairly graceful cartwheel, unfortunately ending with a very substantial deceleration.

Steve just managed to miss being third man down. Phil P arrived about 15 seconds later followed by Chris W and myself about 10 seconds after that.

A very helpful motorist who was between Phil and Chris also stopped to assist.

Mike has lost a fair amount of bark, and, on his left thigh now sports a monumental bruise bifurcated by what appears to be the tread pattern of a GP4000. He'll live to fight another day, however his bike is much the worse for wear.

Brian's frame, on first inspection, doesn't show any damage. His rims are another storey, and for the moment we will call it a 1-all draw between rim and Tilley thigh. Seriously though, after seeing the bruise, had it been any thigh other than Mike's, we might have been adding a broken femur to the mix.

Mike reported, on inspecting Brian's bike this morning, finding a small piece of fabric embedded in the rim. On closer inspection, it proved to be a piece of Mike's knicks:



Oh dear...

Seriously though, whilst we can make light, these events are never fun, and, as Aldo said yesterday, we all wish Brian, in particular, and Mike a speedy recovery.

Men Down

All

Unfortunately today the group had a bad accident in the Hills with both Brian Virgo and Mike Tilley falling on Woods Hill road near the Cold Store.

I wasn't riding so I will let someone who was there give a detailed explanation of the crash. It appears Mike fell first and Brian crashed into him. Brian suspects he may have hit a tree.

Brian is the most badly hurt and was taken to the RAH. He has suffered 6 broken ribs, a minor puncture to the lung and a broken collar bone. They are also concerned about his AC Joint (shoulder) but will know more tomorrow. He is comfortable and in good spirits. He will be in the RAH for 4-5 days depending upon lungs and shoulder. He didn't lose a lot of skin which is a small mercy. A CT scan has given him the all clear for his head, neck and spine.

I have far less information on Mike. He didn't go to hospital and from my information he has lost some skin and is bruised and banged up.  

The BG wish both Brian and Mike a speedy recovery.

  • BG Hills Face (in either direction) Montecute, Ashton, Mt Lofty,  Crafers, Upper Sturt Rd, Main Rd, Windy Point (Coffee in Unley or Stirling or Parade depending upon direction) approx 75km with multiple escape routes
  • An alternative close hills ride
If the weather is crap for the Hills the a decision will be made for Beach or a Foothills ride

Some Clarifications on BG Etiquette arising from the Giro d'Italia 

BG Etiquette Rule #14

If a rider needs to stop for a Natural Break, the BG group will sit up and wait no matter who is up the road on GC or a sprint point being called. That rider will then be ribbed mercilessly for the remainder of the ride with Jibes such :..didn't you have one of those little black bags" etc .

RIDING TO THE SUN

So following on from Aldo's suggestion that I ride the queen stage of the Giro on behalf of BG, I say no, but I did go for a little ride recently. Aldo also asked if I could share the story, so here goes...

Many of you know I have been raising money for, and riding, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation One Ride for the last few years. This year, for some reason, the ride got moved from January to May and conflicted with taking my daughter to the Disney World. Having already raised money, I needed a substitute ride. So, after some research, I stopped off in Maui on the way home to ride the Haleakala, a dormant volcano that takes you from sea level to an elevation of 10,023 feet (or 3.055 metres for those of us that like metric).

The route is 57 kilometres, at around 5.5% gradient, so it is really just like doing Norton Summit ten times. Or so I thought....

Decked out with a almost brand new Specialized Roubaix with a compact and 32 teeth on the cassette, and having polished off a McMuffin and hash brown, I set out from the town of Paia just after 6 am, when it was 27 degrees and 65 percent humidity. Here's my cocky selfie at the start thinking, well, how hard can it be???


Climbing through fields of sugarcane, past WWII military cemeteries all seemed pretty easy. Shortly, after a stop for food in the town of Makawao about 15km in, I was treated to the entire 28 vertical metres of decent (seriously, that is all the decent for the whole ride) where I managed to crack 40 km/h... Woot!

By 20 km in and at about 900 vm, the view opened up, and was starting to look nice.


Looking down was the best idea, because the summit didn't seem to be getting any closer. At 22 km, a series of somewhere between 20 and 30 switchbacks (I lost count) over 12km, taking you from around 950 metres to around 1800 metres started. The gradient kicked up too, and for some reason unknown to man, the corners were ridiculously over cambered. As I had been warned, it is during this period, it gets hard, and your brain starts to mess with you. Those 'it wouldn't be that bad if I didn't make it to the top' thoughts start... At around 1500 metres, and 30km in, you emerge from the trees, and the summit is right there, only 1500 metres above you.

She is still looking really nice, here at around 1900 metres and 37km in.


It's struggle street by this stage, but at around 40km and 2000 metres two riders catch me. A very talkative Maui local, named Brian, explains to me that today he was only riding to the national park entrance, because he is tight with his money and only rides to the summit once a week (it costs $10 to get in). The other rider, from California, having seen my bulging pockets asks if I have any spare food. I give him a couple of gels and a couple of bars and he offers to sherpa me to at least 2700 metres. He keeps his end of the bargain and I hope he wasn't shooting for a time up the hill, because I clearly slowed him down, a lot.

Riding with someone else helped, and the road flattened out, so getting up to 2700 metres went fairly well. The bad news was that, by then, Hypoxia had well and truly kicked in. From 2700 metres to the summit, a distance of 3.5km, I took 30 minutes at a grand average of 7 km an hour. I had to stop around every 400-500 metres for about 60 seconds to gulp down some air and try and find some oxygen within it.

Just to finish of, with around 1.5 km to go, I'm in fog, and the rain starts. Then, as if that wasn't enough, just to tell you you're almost at the top, there is 300 metres at a cramp inducing 12-15%.

Five hours and fifty-four minutes later, I was there. Mike Woods needn't have worried about his KOM...


No speccy photos from 3055 metres, as visibility was down to around 50 metres, so here's me in lycra again. It's a bit like the moon up there anyway.



I didn't ride back down, as (a) you all know how shite I am at descending, (b) it was raining, and (c) the brake levers were the wrong way around (a bit like the side of the road you drive on, the direction you flick light switches and the direction keys rotate in locks).

It was the most amazing ride I have done, and if you like hills, must be on your bicycle bucket list.

Sunday Ride is Hallett Cove

We are now officially into our Winter Ride pattern. Rides will be scheduled as either Beach or Foothills. All Rides will meet in the city and a weather call will be made. If the weather is really good we will either extend or change the ride to do some hills work 

This weeks ride is Hallett Cove which we haven't visited in quite a while. Given the extent of road works we will take a alternative route down to the Cove way.

Meet in the City at 8:00 am

If the weather is good we will look at one of the small extensions to the normal ride that a few people have discussed

Sunday is Mothers Day - No Ride this weekend

When planning this years Ride Calendar we have bowed to the inevitable and accepted that on Mothers day everyone has somewhere to be and something to do. Hence we have taken the opportunity for a end of season break and scheduled NO RIDE for this Sunday Mothers day. 

We have learned that no matter how short you make the ride anyone who braves the wrath and shows up usually needs to cut it short.

Outbound: City to the Parade, Parade to Tower Hotel, Gorge Road to Cudlee Creek, Gorge Road to Torrens Valley Road, Torrens Valley Road to Birdwood

Coffee at the Birdwood 

Return: There are various return journeys possible to be discussed at coffee.

  • Via Burfords Hill Rd - Gumeracha
  • Full traverse via Amy Gillet Bike way

The Kat Killer Klassic honors the anniversary of one cats tragic death and Dave C spectacular fall. For those not in the know early 2009 David C, an original BG and mad cyclist took a bad fall when his paths crossed with a suicidal kitty that resulted in the cat ending up in Dave’s front wheel and subsequently jamming into his fork effectively stopping his front wheel ‘dead’ and ejecting him at speed into the bitumen. The cat survived the ordeal but passed later that night.

As always the BG can’t thank the owner of the cat enough for her assistance with an unconscious David and we respectfully hope the cats death was not to traumatic – R.I.P.P.

As always we will pause briefly at the crash site so that those who were there can recount the events of that fateful day.

I was going to try and organise a BG Lunch for this ride. It hasnt happened again however we can see who is keen for up for second breakfast once we hit town.
